There won’t be toys, but there will be books in the hampers given through community groups at Christmas to families with children.
The books have been donated by Altrusa International of Ashburton, with a top-up from Rotary’s Bookarama.
More than 150 books will be added to the Christmas hampers given to families in need just before Christmas.
Joan Lawn, the chair of Altrusa’s literacy committee, said the club had a focus on literacy and had donated books to the hampers for several years. It was felt books would last longer and be of more benefit than toys. Receiving them was the manager of the Ashburton Community Foodbank, Judith Lilley.
