This is Double Hill Run Road up the Rakaia Gorge. It is laced with shingle and streams run through it.

Motorists are now advised that Double Hill Run Road is closed to the public from Terrible Gully to the end of the road at Glenfalloch Station, following land slips that have made the road inaccessible.

Six slips resulting from the deluge of Cyclone Gita earlier this week are covering sections of the high country road, and Ashburton District Council is advising drivers to avoid it in their travels.

“Council will be onsite next week to assess the condition of the road and investigate what needs to be done,” roading manager Brian Fauth says. “Barriers have been placed on the road to stop traffic, and for the time being, the road will be out of action.”

Motorists are also being advised to be mindful of any other damage sustained to the district’s roads following the heavy rainfall.
