Locally-raised singer and stage performer Ali Diamond will team up with Timaru’s Cameron Lines to present an intimate musical theatre show at Ashburton Event Centre.

Called The Last Five Years, the show draws on a number of musical genres and will be performed tomorrow and Saturday.

The modern musical is an emotionally powerful story of two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years.

It chronicles the marriage of Cathy, played by Ali, and Jamie, played by Cameron, from meeting to break-up and from break-up to meeting.

The show’s unconventional structure tells Cathy’s story backwards, while Jamie’s is told chronologically.

The two characters only meet once in the middle of the show.

Ali said the show featured sad and happy sections and both tears and laughter.

“It’s two people telling their story, so it’s very intimate and intense.”

She and Cameron had already performed the show in Timaru and she was excited to be back on stage in her home town.

Ali is no stranger to the local stage and has performed in a number of productions and also with Ashburton College choirs.

The 23-year-old started singing lessons at aged seven and after finishing school studied for a diploma in travel and tourism.

She enjoyed a two-month stint at Disney World in the USA and worked as a character performer until covid forced her to return home.

She has since performed in community theatre in Christchurch and lives in the Garden City.

A film adaptation of The Last Five Year was released in 2014, starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

Tickets for the 7.30pm shows are available from the event centre or centre’s website.
