A big turnout of 52 karters enjoyed the thrills and spills of grass racing at the Ashburton Family Go Kart Club’s monthly gathering on Sunday.
Held on Robert Begg’s property on Stanley Rd at Wakanui, the line up featured locals and also visitors from Christchurch and Timaru.
Club vice-president Michael Gallagher said the “course had proven popular in the past because it was hilly and a little bit challenging and Sunday’s turnout had been one of the club’s biggest.
Top go-karters were clocking close to 100km/h on the marked 1km circuit, he said.
The club was grateful to the six or seven landowners who allowed them to use paddocks close to Ashburton for “monthly racing.
Lining up on Sunday was Mr Gallagher’s six-year-old son Ryan, who is the New Zealand midget kart champion.
The youngster has been racing for a year and is hooked on the sport.
Other top karters in the club include two time national champion Ben McLaren, his brother Scott and Andrew Green.
The family-oriented “club meets on the third Sunday of the month year round and has members aged from six through to some approaching retirement.
Michael Gallagher said the club was about getting together for regular racing and having fun.
