A&P show canned over covid concerns

The Ashburton A&P Show, scheduled for next month, has been cancelled because of uncertainties about mass gatherings under ongoing covid restrictions.

Show administrator Lucille Brown now has the unenviable task of organising refunds to over 330 entries and quite a few of the 97 trade and market sites which had booked to take part.

There are also sponsors to contact.

Lucille’s phone and email messages have been flat out since the announcement this week.

“It’s a lot easier to cancel now than a week before the show.”

Mrs Brown said committee members had discussed running of the 143rd annual event but with other shows cancelling and no guarantee on gathering number restrictions in the immediate future, the decision to cancel had been made.

A handful of events run by the A&P association were keen to proceed: Highland Dancing will be run in the Netherby School Hall on October 31, the Tux dog trials will go ahead at the top of the grounds on October 30 and 31, the Alpaca Association was looking to run an event on October 31, and showjumping will definitely run an event over the same weekend, but will confirm their schedule soon.

While the smaller events would go ahead, they would not include any trade or food sites, sideshows or entertainment.
