Ashburton’s Americar Rod & Custom Club Inc is celebrating its 50th year and will host the Protecta Insurance NZHRA Street Rod Nationals from March 30 to April 2.
It will be the fifth time the club has hosted the premier event on the New Zealand Hot Rod Association calendar and the public is invited to a big car display at Ashburton Racecourse on Easter Sunday.
Event committee chairman Keith Drummond said around 200 cars were expected for the nationals.
“We’ve got cars confirmed from the length and breadth of the country and it’s going to be a great few days,” he said.
Mr Drummond said it was a fitting way for the Americar club to celebrate its 50th year and club members were looking forward to it.
“This will be the fifth time the nationals has been in the district – we had it in 1981, 1983, 1985 and 2008.
“Hot rod owners like our central location and the hospitality here.
“Hopefully there will be enough accommodation for everybody because it’s going to be busy and good for the local economy.”
Mr Drummond said the club had had a relatively short time to organise things, but “it knew what needed to be done and was getting on with it”.
The public car display on Easter Sunday will run from 10am until 3pm and will include food stalls and trade displays.
Entry costs $5 for adults and $2 for children and proceeds will go to the new fire museum development at The Plains.
