Baker Matt uses alpaca in pie competition entry

Ashburton baker Matt Harvey thinks he might be on to a winner with his alpaca pie. Mr Harvey, of Harvey’s Bakehouse in Creek Road, joked with staff last year that he would make one for the annual Bakel’s Supreme Pie Awards so thought he had better do it. The result is a meaty taste sensation which will go before the judges in late July. Mr Harvey said the meat came from a processor in Hawkes Bay, and the pies were finding favour. He said he was hopeful of a good result in the competition. ‘‘I’m hopeful; we have the filling worked out.’’ The pies are on sale in his shop.
