Proceeds from a barbecue run last year by Ashburton Borough School’s environment group The Greenies has been spent on reusable containers that will help save on school waste.

Some $500 raised from the sausage sizzle has funded 158 sistema lunch and snack containers.

The containers will be given out to Year 7 and 8 students and any left over will be given to Year 5/6 students.

Borough greenie Henry Goodes said it was hoped that the good example of using reusable containers rather than plastic would be copied by younger students.

“Our aim is to cut down on unwanted school waste and this is an easy way to achieve it.”

The containers will be distributed in the near future.
