Close to 350 cubs descended on Ashburton on Saturday to celebrate 100 years of cubbing in New Zealand.

Mania-O-Roto Cub Zone hosted zone groups from Pegasus Bay, Port Hills, South Canterbury and Torlesse at Mania-O-Roto Park.

The afternoon of celebrations included a number of fun and active challenges.

Cubs tackled a cargo net, zumba, rope walk, minefield grid challenge and heard about the movement’s history.

The oldest and youngest cubs from each of the five zones were invited to cut one of a number of commemorative cakes with Ashburton mayor Donna Favel.

Dinner for 500 guests, including around 80 cub leaders, included hot chips, sausages and bread, served up by Ashburton Lions Club volunteers.
