Hundreds of people lined State Highway from Tinwald to the Walnut Avenue roundabout in Ashburton to support a ‘‘freedom convoy’’ making its way up the South Island today.

Convoys of all types of motor vehicles left Bluff and Cape Reinga destined to meet up at Parliament in Wellington on Tuesday, protesting Covid-19 mandates, the Bill of Rights, and censorship.

The convoy entered the south of Ashburton at around 4.30pm and took around an hour to pass through.

Supporters of all ages, many with placards, cheered on drivers in the convoy and traffic was at a crawling pace for a while.
