Ashburton council has issued a precautionary boil-water notice for the Methven water supply, effective immediately.
Residents connected to the Methven supply should boil their drinking water, and water used in food preparation and for hygiene purposes for at least three minutes before consumption.
Monitoring equipment at the Methven treatment plant has detected high turbidity – otherwise described as cloudiness – in the supply, which has likely been caused by recent rainfall.
The treatment plant equipment is operating normally but is less effective during periods of high turbidity, and council has issued the notice as a precaution.
Council also issued a precautionary boil water notice for the Mt Somers and Montalto schemes on Saturday 6 January following the detection of high turbidity levels.
All three precautionary boil water notices will remain in place until further advised by council.
