Jim Burgess has been presented with a certificate recognising his contribution to the community through his service on the Ashburton District Licensing Committee and Experience Mid Canterbury.
The presentation was made at a full meeting of council by mayor Donna Favel.
Mrs Favel said Mr Burgess – Gentleman Jim – served as a commissioner on the district licensing committee since 2013, when the new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act came into force.
“This was new territory for everyone involved in liquor licensing, and as always, Jim provided a steady approach and a voice of reason.
“Over this period he attended well over 100 meetings and signed off 220 managers’ certificates and chaired public hearings.
Mr Burgess was also the council’s appointee on the Ashburton District Tourism Board from October 2010 and helped oversee its transition to a council-controlled organisation.
