Major works around Ashburton’s central business district are nearing completion.

The CBD streetscape renovation is expected to be completed by November 22.

Contractors were laying tarseal on Havelock Street earlier this week.

The work started in January 2020 and has involved a variety of council departments and contractors who have built new roads and footpaths, renewed underground services and installed street lights and added trees, and gardens.

Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said the CBD project was a big one for council and the community and he encouraged everyone to check out the progress when next in town.

“Streets completed so far include Cass, Moore, Tancred, Burnett and most of East.

“We are planting the green belt along East Street at the moment and constructing a concrete pad that will first accommodate the giant Christmas tree,” he said.

The fountain on East Street is also being worked on with contractors re-fibreglassing the lower fountain ponds to tidy it up/refurbish and to prevent leakage.

“Now, it is up to us to enjoy and use the space – visit our excellent food and beverage providers and buy from local retailers and businesses,” Mr Riach said.
