New Ashburton Arcade cafe owners Gary and Kara Glover have swapped technology and design jobs and the heat of Australia for an improved lifestyle and the seasonal climate of Mid Canterbury.
Gary, a Liverpudlian, and Kara, an Aucklander, took over the arcade eatery in May and have enjoyed the change of scenery and new challenges since.
The pair started the search for a business opportunity late last year and the South Island was their preferred location.
Gary cites the desire for a better lifestyle as the main motivator for the country swap and job change.
“We’ve been learning from the ground up and very quickly, but it’s been great.
“For me personally, the best part about hospitality compared with my old IT job is meeting different people every day. I used to look after 3000 desktops and 1000 servers, so its quite a change.”
Kara said the couple had lived in Mt Isa, Queensland for the last 10 years, where the temperature was between 33 and 36 deg.C in the winter and approaching 48 degrees in the summer.
She had been a graphic designer in Australia and the couple had also lived in Townsville for two years.
The Glovers have named their new business Tea For Two Cafe, with Kara designing the logo and signage and Gary setting up a website (t42.cafe) and Facebook page.
A new take away option for hot food and coffee has been re-introduced in recent days.
For now the Glovers live in Methven, but a move to Ashburton is planned for the new year.
