Ashburton's covid community testing centre will relocate to South Street from tomorrow.

Demand for covid tests in Ashburton has been so high the long-standing Covid-19 community testing centre is moving from the grounds of Ashburton Hospital to a larger space at South Street.

Canterbury District Health Board Emergency Co-ordination Centre incident controller Tracey Maisey said increased demand has been an issue at community testing centres across the Canterbury region.

New South Street location for Ashburton’s covid community testing centre.

The new Ashburton centre will be at the former Ashburton Contracting Ltd (ACL) building, at 48 South Street, from tomorrow (Thursday, February 24).

It will be open seven days a week, from 10am to 2pm.

‘‘The move to the ACL Building means more people will be able to be tested. The new South Street site is also more accessible,’’ Ms Maisey said.

Testing at the Ashburton centre has also increased from being open just three days a week to the four hours, every day.

‘‘We thank members of the health community who have put their hand up to support this mahi,’’ she said.

People only need to get tested if they have symptoms, are a close contact or have been directed to by a health official.

Please help us make the best use of our resources and don’t turn up for a covid test unless you meet the criteria, she said.

COVID-19 symptoms
Common symptoms of Covid-19 are like those found with illnesses such as a cold or influenza.
You may have one or more of the following:
new or worsening cough
sneezing and runny nose
fever
temporary loss of smell or altered sense of taste
sore throat
shortness of breath

Less common symptoms of Covid-19 may include diarrhoea, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, malaise, chest pain, abdominal pain, joint pain or confusion/irritability.

These almost always occur with one or more of the common symptoms.

Symptoms tend to arise around two to five days after a person has been infected but can take up to 14 days to show. The virus can be passed onto others before they know they have it – from up to two days before symptoms develop.
