Balloon faces of all colours recently lit up the classroom of Year 3 and 4 pupils at Hinds School.

The pupils were learning the art of cartoon drawing by Brent Harpur, who was visiting the school for classroom workshops sessions.

Legally blind, Mr Harpur, of Oamaru, has been working as a cartoonist for more than 30 years. He has worked in New Zealand, as well as Australia, the United States and South America.

He has a studio/shop in the heritage precinct in Oamaru but spent three days at the school teaching workshops to pupils across the ages.

During his workshops he taught the children about 2D drawing, including facial features and how to draw cartoon animals.

Then using the balloons taught about 3D drawing, and positioning of facial features such as ears, eyes and noses when the head turns.

There was also a section on simple clay characters.

Mr Harpur was also going to help identify pupils to help him design a mural for the school, which was an exciting future project.
