Expect delays travelling through Ashburton in the coming days due to ongoing works along the main thoroughfare.
The night works, with stop/go traffic management in place, will be happening at three points along the route from Walnut Avenue, to the Ashburton River bridge to Archibald/ Agnes streets/Laghmor Road in Tinwald.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency journey manager Tresca Forrester said work was likely to affect drivers in Ashburton from this Sunday night (October 3).
Ground testing will also be underway on SH1 in nearby Tinwald Monday and possibly Tuesday night overnight, with a detour for north-bound traffic.
“The work in Ashburton will run for five nights to the following Thursday night,” Ms Forrester said.
Two sites – one at the bridge and one at Walnut Ave – will have night crews working with Stop/Go traffic management which may cause short delays for road users.
The bridge work starts at 9pm, Walnut Ave work at 7 pm.
Ms Forrester thanked all evening and overnight drivers for their patience while the project teams complete their next stages.
The works on the Ashburton River/ Hakatere Bridge (SH1) is to repair the deck after storm damage in late-May. It will take place from Sunday night through until Thursday night October 7. Work will be done from 9pm to 5am.
The deck surface will be smoothed and reinstated after pier repairs following the end of May flood, she said.
There will be a full night closure the following Sunday (October) from 10pm to 5am.
“The detour route will be sign posted, but people need to build in some extra time.”
The repair to the damaged pier will be completed by mid-October with scour protection work under the bridge going through to the end of October.
At Walnut Ave the roundabouts, which have already had their islands removed, were becoming traffic signal intersections (includes SH1).
This work would also start on Sunday and run through until Thursday (October 7) from 7pm until 6am.
The work involves the roundabout islands at the intersections of East and West Streets being removed and road seal replaced.
There will also be ground testing work at the corner of Archibald and Agnes streets/Lagmhor Road on Monday, and likely Tuesday nights from 10pm until 8am.
The noisy work will happen earlier in the night.
There will be a detour for north-bound traffic along Melcombe St parallel to the main road but otherwise minimum delays.
