Ashburton could have its own “justice precinct” if police take over the vacated district council building in the future, says Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon.
The council building sits in a prime location, just off the main road of downtown Ashburton, and conveniently next to the court house.
Mr Falloon said Ashburton police were planning a major refurbishment or relocation within the next seven years and were also looking for a more visible presence in the community.
“With the council exiting their current building it makes sense for police to take over the site.
“It’s vital that the new police station remains in the middle of town. A redeveloped council building provides that and offers a central location close to State Highway One.
“Police themselves have rightly identified the council site as an option. It’s important that the Government considers the wider benefits of having justice services run out of one location,” Mr Falloon says.
He said having a visible police presence next door would help lessen violent or abusive incidents outside the courthouse.
