Two mayoral candidates, sitting mayor Donna Favel and councillor Neil Brown, are making all-or-nothing bids for the top job.
Mr Brown announced his candidacy last week – Mrs Favel lodged her mayoral nomination this morning, just before the noon cut-off.
She is nominated by Jacqueline Heffernan and Kevin Geddes.
But she, like Mr Brown, is not seeking a seat around the table, so if the mayoral bid fails, they will not be back.
Mrs Favel is seeking her second term.
She is Ashburton’s first female mayor and will be sworn in on Monday as a Justice of the Peace.
Cr Leen Braam, who is also seeking the top job, is also in for a seat in the Ashburton Ward.
Retired retailer Tony Todd, a long-time chair of the Ashburton Licensing Trust, also has his name in for the top job.
Full candidate wrap in Thursday’s Courier.
