Ashburton driving instructor Bikash Sukul is offering free driving lessons to seniors in a gesture to help boost confidence and sharpen awareness skills.

The newly qualified NZTA approved instructor said he believed a number of older drivers were nervous on the roads and he wanted to do his bit to help them feel more at ease.

“I’ve been in the community fro 12 years and I want to give something back. I’ve seen for myself how some older drivers hesitate at intersections in particular, or drive slowly because they are nervous and unsure,” he said.

Mr Sukul said most seniors had had their licenses for many years and were set in their ways with driving.

“There is more traffic on the roads today and there have been a number of big rule changes over the years, so brushing up on those changes can only be a good thing.

“A lot of older drivers have no option other than to drive. Some take risks that they should not be taking and I want to help reduce those risks.”

Mr Sukul is offering one free lesson per week, with more lessons if necessary, and will use his own car.

He runs Mid Canterbury Driving School and offers lessons to all levels and ages.
