Fuchsia enthusiasts are on the way to Ashburton.
The Ashburton Fuchsia Group is hosting the annual meeting of the National Fuchsia Society of New Zealand from March 15 to 18, and based at Hotel Ashburton.
About 60 people are expected to attend.
The Ashburton group is led by May Sanford, and she said new members were welcome.
Ashburton gardener Trevor Gamblin is a past president of the national group and has been growing fuchsia for many years.
“I used to grow hebes but Anne brought home some fuchsias bits one day and they were easier to grow than hebes.”
At their former home in Bird Street, Ashburton, Mr Gamblin had some 600 varieties.
He said there were around 2000 varieties available in New Zealand, but more than 20,000 worldwide.
“They are the most beautiful flower there is, there is no argument about it,” Mr Gamblin said.
The annual gathering will involve a mystery bus tour and other points of interest.
