Nine hole golfers from around Canterbury took part in the annual Ashburton Golf Club
tournament last week.

The greens were in top form and the weather gods were smiling.

Tournament MC Dick Hansen said 60 golfers; around 48 ladies and 12 men, were involved in the tournament with players from Ashburton Golf Club, Mayfield, Methven, Russley, Waimari Beach, Greendale, Ellesmere, Timaru and Pleasant Point.

They played as individuals, not in teams, with men playing in one open competition and the ladies in one of two grades, depending on their handicap when they registered.

Among the ladies playing were Wendy Smith of Ashburton Golf Club, Glenys Panfilow, of Waimari Golf Club, Jill Taylor, of Ellesmere Golf Club and Barbara May, of Greendale Golf Club.

By the end of their first hole they were in fine form, enjoying the outing in favourable weather.

The greens are really good thanks to the greenkeeper and team who have done a very,
very good job maintaining the course, Mr Hansen said.

The players were vying for prizes in categories such as best nett, closest to the pin and least number of putts, Mr Hansen said.

It was also the first time players could win a prize for the straightest drive, which had
replaced the longest drive category.

The tournament, run for many years, was similar to events held at other clubs and frequented by many players from the Ashburton District.

The Ashburton tournament started with morning tea and a briefing before tee-off. Then
finished with lunch and prizegiving.

‘‘It’s a good social outing,’’ Mr Hansen said.
