A trio from Ashburton Intermediate School has claimed the title of the best Year 7/8 spellers in Mid and South Canterbury.

Laura Winchester, Molly McKenna and Laura Jensen scored 93 points out of 100 before winning a thrilling spell-off against a team from St Joseph’s School, Ashburton.

It took seven spell-off questions, with words including “effervescent”, “psychology” and “camaraderie”, to decide the winner, with the Ashburton girls claiming the title after correctly spelling “sergeant’.

Two other teams from Ashburton Intermediate and another from Borough School also contested the competition.

The Otago Daily Times Extra! Spelling Quiz was held at the Timaru Boys’ High School hall and featured 34 teams in the Year 7/8 competition.

Some 26 teams entered the Year 5/6 competition, which was won by a trio from Gleniti School.

Extra! Spelling Quiz co-ordinator Tricia Rowe said there had once again been a high calibre of students at the popular quiz event.

An enjoyable evening had ended with a close run competition in the Year 7/8 event and an exciting spell-off.

The quiz ran in multiple locations around the country by the Otago Daily Times, through Extra!, its monthly Newspapers in Education publication for primary, intermediate and junior secondary school pupils.
