John Steele is one of the safest drivers on the road and has the statistics to back it up.
The 71-year-old retiree has just been acknowledged as having the highest average safety score for any user of Tower’s GoCarma app.
John has an average score of 88 out of 100 and has driven over 10,000km over the past 12 months, including a trip to the North Island’s East Cape.
Data amassed through the app shows Westport as the country’s safest driving region, and Auckland and Canterbury as the worst.
Over 10.5 million kilometres of driving data has been recorded in the app’s inaugural year.
The app is on John’s phone and works through Bluetooth. It measures cornering, acceleration, braking and phone distractions.
John gets behind the wheel for regular trips to Christchurch or Ashburton, and to visit his grandkids in North Canterbury.
“I got my licence when I was 16 and I have always tried to drive to the conditions and be observant of potential hazards.”
John, who worked for Carter Holt Harvey for many years, sticks to the speed limit and has never received a ticket in all his years of driving.
He and partner Gloria moved south after the Christchurch earthquakes and enjoys living in the Rakaia township.
John found out about GoCarma through the MyTower portal and has already won prizes for his safe driving, including two tickets to the All Blacks Experience in Auckland earlier this year.
He has also been awarded the inaugural GoCarma Safest Driver of the Year Award and has been refunded the remaining cost of his annual car premium.
His message to summer motorists is to be prepared for more traffic than usual and to drive safely.
