Lions memories rekindled

Rugby memories have been rekindled with the chance discovery of a match programme from the British Lions vs Mid Canterbury game played in Ashburton on May 31, 1983.

Among the crowd at the Showgrounds was the late Len Sandrey, a rugby supporter from Mt Somers, who kept the programme until his death six years ago.

The rediscovery of the programme by Len’s son, Brian, last week comes almost 34 years to the day since that big game and also coincides with another British Lions tour.

Mr Sandrey said he had enjoyed a nostalgic look through the 1983 programme because he knew a number of the players in the Grant Perry-captained Mid Canterbury squad.

Players like John and Peter McLay, Jock Ross and Huia Gordon were all local legends.

The British Lions team had featured the likes of Dusty Hare, Clive Woodward, Maurice Colclough and John Rutherford, he said.

“I thought it quite appropriate to find the programme at a time when the Lions have just arrived to play here again.”jordan SneakersNike
