Local swimmers in deep end of training

It’s been a busy three days of swimming ‘‘immersion’’ for three Ashburton teenagers.
Bailey Tait, Jared Scammell and Bree Middleton, all members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team, have been taking part in the Canterbury Squad Tri Series, a rigorous pathway that exposes athletes to different training and racing environments.
The trio swam in three different pools (Christchurch, Rolleston and Ashburton) this week and have also enjoyed advice from different coaches.
Swimmers have also trained out of the water, were advised on food and nutrition and heard from a number of guest speakers.
The main focus of the tri series is the constant pursuit of improved performance, skills and techniques.
Bailey Tait, who was attending her third tri series, said the three days were full on, tiring, but also enjoyable.
Thirty-six swimmers had been split into three groups, which had promoted strong team spirit and encouraged competition, she said.
Swimmers tackled distances of 100m to 400m and also relays, and coaches had chosen who swam which strokes.
All swimmers taking part qualified for the Tri series and were aged between 12 and 15 years.
They all wore smart tri series uniforms when travelling between swims.
