Ashburton College runner Taonga Mbambo has placed an impressive 12th at the Australian Cross Country Championships.
Held at the weekend on the Sunshine Coast, the Year 13 student was the third New Zealander to cross the finish line in his first overseas championship.
He was one of 82 athletes in the Under 18 race, which was won by Murdoch McIntyre of New Zealand, who clocked a time of 20m.14s over the 6km distance.
Taonga Mbambo recorded a time of 21 minutes and was part of the New Zealand team which came third. He is now training for track events later this year in Dunedin.
