The protective cage for the rare wollemi pine that will be planted in the Ashburton Domain.

Walkers in the Ashburton Domain will have noticed a new metal cage among the trees off West Street.

It is destined to hold a rare tree, a wollemi pine that is part of the conifer family.

Council is expanding its conifer collection in the area and the new wollemi pine will have a cage for protection. The tree is officially classified as critically endangered.

Staff are working on information boards near the cage and they will be installed soon.

The domain’s irrigation system is also being audited for necessary repairs so the new planting can be watered.
