Well known local family, the Murneys, are behind a new building project going up in central Ashburton that will help with the rejuvenation of the CBD.

Foundation work has begun for a new four-storey building on the high profile site on the corner of East and Burnett streets.

The Murney Trust is developing the empty section and the building is expected to be completed in around 15 months.

Bradfords is the main contractor and a number of local businesses will be involved with it.

The new building will sit on a small footprint and, when completed, is expected to be one of the CBD’s tallest buildings.

Ashburton council has approved consents for foundation work, which began on Monday.

Murney Family Trust adviser Julie Inwood said the Murney family was keen to help breath life back into the CBD and and saw the project as its way of doing that.

Logistically the build would be tricky on its small, high profile footprint, but the end result would feature unique elements and an aesthetically pleasing building, in line with other Murney properties.

The building would feature the Murney family crest on it when completed.

Mrs Inwood said it was an exciting project for the family and the outstanding team who had been involved with it over the last 12 months.

Discussions were ongoing with potential tenants for the building.
