Passion for milk product brings out thirsty locals

Ashburton residents were the first in the country to taste the new double caramel milk product from Lewis Road Creamery on Monday, after impressing judges in an online competition.
More than 10,000 people entered the competition online, but a ‘‘general passionate response’’ from Ashburton Facebook users convinced judges that it was the right place to hold the launch event, said Lewis Road Creamery spokesman Angela Weeks.
The newly launched product was a deep, dark golden caramel and butterscotch mix, she said.
The product hit the supermarket shelves on Wednesday, but two days earlier a caravan was set up in the carpark at Ashburton New World to dish out free samples to locals.
A large queue formed at the launch and former Masterchef winner Chelsea Winter, who has collaborated with Lewis Road to come up with the product, was on hand to share the product and also to record a live Facebook item.
