The police Eagle helicopter was used in Ashburton on Sunday
night to try to find a fleeing vehicle.
It was one of two serious incidents involving Ashburton – and the
helicopter – at the weekend.
In the first, Ashburton police received a report of a “car of interest” being driven on State Highway One at 11.45pm. Police tried to pull the vehicle over but the driver decided to flee and police followed for a short time before losing sight of the vehicle at Chertsey.
The Eagle helicopter was called but no one was found.
Meanwhile, Timaru police tried to pull over a vehicle of interest at 12.30am.
That driver decided to flee and police followed being standing down.
But the vehicle was spotted by police in the Ashburton area and it was spiked on the Ashburton bridge and the offenders fled on foot.
The Eagle helicopter and a dog unit assisted in finding and arresting a man and a woman.
A 19-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man are to appear to the District Court in Timaru on April 16 on driving charges.
