Ashburton council has issued a precautionary boil water notice for the Montalto water supply, effective immediately.
Residents who use this scheme should boil their drinking water, and water used in food preparation and for hygiene purposes for at least three minutes before consumption.
Monitoring equipment at the Montalto treatment plant has detected high turbidity – otherwise described as cloudiness – in the water supply, which was likely caused by the rainfall experienced in recent days.
The treatment plant equipment is operating normally but is less effective during periods of high turbidity, and council has issued the notice as a precautionary measure.
The precautionary boil water notice will remain in place until further advised by council.
