The Mid Canterbury Cancer Society is running their Relay For Life online this weekend.

The event, due to take place at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday, is instead being run virtually with teams posting photographs and video footage of their fundraising efforts on the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society Facebook page.

Relay For Life committee chairperson Lester McLean said finally, after months and months of postponements people could get together in their teams to celebrate, just not together.

The Mid Canterbury event has 66 teams and 366 individuals entered and at last count had already raised $115,470 through various fundraising efforts.

On Saturday, via the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society Facebook page, there will be an opening ceremony at 10am which will kickstart fundraising events for the day happening all over the district.

There will also be some entertainment throughout the day and pre-recorded activities such as singing, gymnastics.

At 9pm the traditional candlelight ceremony would be livestreamed on the Facebook page, he said.

People were encouraged to send in photographs and videos of their fundraising activities as well as their candlelight ceremonies to the society’s Facebook page.

Donations can be made directly to the teams and individuals involved via the Mid Canterbury page at relayforlife.org.nz

Mr McLean said although gathering was not possible due to covid, people could still remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate cancer survivors and those going through cancer currently, and to fight back against cancer by raising funds for the Cancer Society.
