Roll up, roll up – it’s a mayoral challenge

It was a casual challenge, on-air, so it had to be followed through.
It was.
Ashburton mayor Donna Favel brought in the heavies – respected bowler Russell Ellis and Peter Reveley to help her in her bowls challenge at the Ashburton Bowling Club in a match against Hokonui Radio’s Phil (Hoops) Hooper, Peter McQuarters and sales boss Carol Johns.
Former mayor Murray Anderson gave the teams a quick talk, mentioned that New Zealand greens were some of the fastest in the world, and recalled that the mayor’s grandmother had taught her to bowl.
Then they began.
Russell Ellis showed the style that had led him to representative
status. They played six ends, with the council coming out on top 13-3.
