RST workplace assistance

Rural Support Trust (RST) Mid Canterbury co-ordinator Frances Beeston.

Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust has been dealing with an influx of employment related queries.

Some of the issues have included getting farm workers, who do not live on site, basic provisions such as toilet and wash facilities for break times.

Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust wellness co-ordinator Frances Beeston said on average a third of the calls which had been received were employment related.

There was even a dedicated 800 rural employment line for those with concerns. It is 0800 694 121.

The trust, along with Tavendale and Partners, have set up an online employment law session next week with tips and tricks to help employers – and their employees – know legal requirements.

The free Navigating Employment Issues webinar, will take place via Zoom on June 14, from 6pm to 7pm.

The meeting log in details are on the trust’s Facebook page.

“We’ll talk about real life scenarios and situations, and equip you with practical tools to understand your rights and requirements,” Ms Beeston said.

“We’re wanting both sides to know what support is available and how to go about looking after our rural teams.”

Most farmers have a healthy working relationship with their employer or employees which is demonstrated by transparent and respectful two-way communication within a contract/agreement satisfying both parties.

However, there are times when farming conditions or individual stresses create an unhealthy environment.

Rural Support facilitators are trained to provide a supportive environment so both parties can work their way back to the previous good working relationship, or triage to professionals with expertise.

“Our experienced team of facilitators are rural people with local knowledge who have faced the challenges that rural life brings.”

The Mid Canterbury trust covers the Mid Canterbury area between the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers.
