Singing students set the stage

Singing school students rehearse music from Coco ahead of two public concerts this week.

One hundred talented singers honing their skills at the annual Mid Canterbury summer singing school will put on two public concerts at the end of this week.

The school is in its 21st year and the students have been busy this week with two days of musical theatre tuition in the Bradford room at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, before moving to the auditorium to prepare for the public performances.

Musical director Jo Castelow said it was the first time the school had also included a guest choreographer, which was Julia Bell, a past singing school student.

She said the music was fabulous and included old favourites like the Jungle Book, Stairway to Heaven, We are the Champions and music from Elton John’s film Rocketman. There was also material from new musicals like Spring Awakening, Moulin Rouge the Musical, Harriet Tubman, Coco and Frozen 2.

Mrs Castelow said the students had been busy this week working on their craft and were excited about the concerts on Friday (January 8) and Saturday (January 9). The concerts will be at the event centre, starting 7.30pm.
