Sister Act characters set to rock the rafters

Wardrobes packed with habits, sequined dresses, clothing for bad boys, tarts and a monsignor, as well as dozens of pairs of shoes have arrived at Variety Theatre Ashburton’s (VTA) rehearsal rooms.

This year’s VTA production is Sister Act, a musical comedy that will rock the rafters at Ashburton Trust Event Centre in May and June.

The show features a range of characters, including nuns, glitzy nuns, thugs and altar boys, and a number of classy, upbeat songs.

Costumes and shoes arrived in large crates on Saturday, accompanied by Musical Theatre NZ Consortium members Vicki Morris-Williamson and Deirdre Fell.

Hundreds of items were counted out and will be counted back in after the show.

The Sister Act cast of 32 will be fitted over the coming weeks and any adjustments made to costumes.

“Cast members gathered on Sunday for the first rehearsals of the year.

They will work with musical director Jo Castelow and choreographer Jessie “Thomson over the next six weeks, before director Regan Jackson steps on board to fine tune the show.

Sharleyne Diamond will take on the role of Deloris, made famous in “the film version of Sister Act by Whoopi Goldberg.

Well known local performers in the show include Luke Glendining, Chris Woods, Brent Grey, “Brooke Dwyer, Patrice Hammond and Kim Vessey.

The set for Sister Act is due to arrive in May.
