Spooky halloween in Rakaia

Spooktacular happenings are planned for halloween in Rakaia this year and being hosted by the town’s scouting group.

But volunteers are needed to help make spooky decorations and act as haunting characters, as well as help with set up and take down.

Organiser Anita Ruigrok said planning for the event had been under way since late last year with some decorations purchased from overseas but many more needed to be made.

She was keen to support the scouts and had personally financed the decorations so far.

“I believe it’s important for children to go somewhere that encourages them to go outdoors and help their neighbours,” she said.

“If this event can raise enough money for them to fund them for a year, I don’t mind paying for all decorations … because it helps the community in the long run I believe.”

There was a fair amount of work done and Anita was positive it could be a massive success.

“I want to give Rakaia something that they can be proud of, and look forward to for hopefully many years to come,” Anita said.

She was seeking volunteers to help with decorations and to dress up as characters – it could be a Disney character, a haunted person, someone from a church scene or a Halloween theme.

The evening, being run at the Rakaia Scout Den, on the corner of Railway Terrace and Normanby Street, in Rakaia on October 30, begins at 5pm for younger children and gets more spooky for older children from 7pm.

Anita is also seeking a photographer and spacefiller decorations such as small haybales, metal stakes to keep tombstones in place.

She has been making decorations over the past few months but in the lead up to halloween is seeking to ramp up tombstone production with drawing, cutting and painting.

She is using a mix of brush and paint and spray paint techniques.

As part of the event, which will be a gold coin entry for the Rakaia Scouts, Anita has also been in touch with potential haunting actors and suppliers for bulk halloween treats.

There has also been a backdrop organised for a ghoulishly good photo competition, facepainting and the scouts will have barbecue sausages and drinks for sale.
