Strong wind fells big oak bough

Checking out the felled bough are Jill Newton and Heather Daly.

Strong winds have snapped off a huge bough from an oak tree in central Ashburton.
The wind gust struck at around 12.30pm and felled the branch of the tree located in front of the Balmoral Hall on Cass Street.
There was no damage to property or cars.
The hefty 25m long branch fell to the south and grazed the nearby wall of the adjacent property formerly used by Winz.
Jill Newton was working across the road in Salvation Army offices said she heard a ‘‘huge crash’’ and went to investigate.
She placed nearby road cones around the hazard and later Police and traffic management did the same.
The wind in the Ashburton CBD has dropped off since the incident.
