Youth on the BASE holiday programme this week have been learning useful bush craft and survival skills, including fire building.

Based at Mania-O-Roto Park, 17 participants learnt about fire safety, fire preparation and cooking on an open fire on Monday. They cooked up sausages and damper for afternoon tea.

On Tuesday the focus switched to emergency bush equipment. Shelters were made from natural materials and improvised tools were crafted.

On Friday the fire brigade will teach participants how to ‘Get Down, Get Low and Get out – Fast’ in case of a fire. Navigation and orienteering skills will also be practised on the day.

BASE returns to its usual home at 193 Burnett Street for the second week of the school holidays and cooking, craft, civil defence survival planning, swimming and an Amazing Race are all on the activity programme.
