Ashburton’s East Street water feature not so go west, but north?
The council on Thursday (June 27) will discuss the merits of shifting the water feature to the Ashburton Domain as it may compromise the streetscape for a redeveloped central business district.
Council’s Town Centre Working Group has been involved with streetscape design with Aecom consultants.
Preliminary design work for the area has shown that retaining the feature will compromise design, including a proposed cycleway which would need to be diverted.
Shifting it would also allow “new social gathering spaces, play, and water features”.
The working group took into account council’s recent decision on the future relocation of the former information centre because the building would not be in keeping with a modern and refreshed CBD.
Though the group thought the feature pleasing, it has suggested that the sculpture might be better suited to the domain environment.
Possible sites include near the children’s play area, or between the ponds near the oval.
