Punk-pop band takes out final

Four piece punk-pop band Pseudo Sane from Geraldine High School took out the Timaru regional final of Smokefreerockquest in front of a crowd of 200 at the Theatre Royal.
Guitarist and vocalist William Holland puts the win down to their unique sound and connection as a band.
“We’re just a bit different. We like to take it back to ‘90s early style, you know, the early stages of rock,” he says. “We like to create a lot of energy… running about and jumping, incorporating a crowd into your performance, like having them in the palm of your hand, it’s just an amazing rush.”
The other members of Pseudo Sane are front-woman and singer Aria Cressey, drummer Felix Finlayson-Hood and bass player Henry Watts.
Fusion In The Sun from Timaru Boys’ High School placed second; the band members are Harry Hollyer (lead vocals and electric guitar), Cameron Ellis (electric guitar), David Ellis (bass and keyboard), and Farran Landers (drummer).
In the solo duo section, Caitlin Bradley from Roncalli College placed first. The singer-songwriter says she has her favourite Kiwi music idols to thank for her success.
“Music was always my forte growing up. When I was younger I used to listen to Jamie McDell, and I talked to her when she came down to Timaru – she kind of inspired me tostart writing.” Jason Kerrison (former Opshop frontman) has also been an inspiration for Caitlin, and encouraged her to try using a loop pedal.
Miriama and Sonia from Ashburton College placed second.
First and second in both categories win musical gear from associate sponsor NZ Rockshops and their suppliers. They now submit 15 minutes of their best material for selection as national finalists.
