Road safety messaging for teens

The chessboard at Ashburton College was the scene of at simulated car crash yesterday.

Aimed at Year 12 students the school’s Student Welfare Committee collaborated with emergency services and Ashburton District Council to raise vital awareness about driving safety at the students critical age.

The simulation began with firefighters using cutting equipment to free the driver, a student volunteer.

Door, dash and side support removed, Hato Hone St John then stepped in to stretcher the driver to the ambulance, all the while Hato Hone St John’s Simon O’Reilly walked students through the car crash scene.

Simulation over, the students divided into groups to meet with emergency personnel to chat further about the road safety message and accident prevention.
