Today is Pink Ribbon Day, a day when the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation encourages groups, businesses, friends and families to raise funds for the foundation.

People can hold a Pink Ribbon event such as a breakfast, morning tea, cake stall or brunch. They are being held throughout the month of May.

On Sunday the Rakaia Recreation Centre was a sea of pink in support of the cause.

Rakaia Lions Club members held a brunch. It was a great success with about 80 attending, including two youngsters.

This is the second year the club has held the fundraiser.

Member Tonya Williams said the event had been built on the success of an inaugural brunch last year.

Members had been not only wanting to support the good cause, but also raise awareness.

“We have had a few members’ wives who have and are having the battle with breast cancer,’’ Williams said.

About 60 raffle prizes were on offer at the event.

“The mystery bottle auction was a hoot. Mark Hanrahan was the auctioneer and he bumped up the prices for those he knew could afford extra,’’ Williams said.

The amount raised through the brunch, raffles and auction was about $4300.
