The Tinwald rail viaduct was damaged when a small digger on a trailer struck it on Monday about 3.30pm.

A KiwiRail spokesperson said on Tuesday the bridge remained open for trains, but there was a speed restriction in place.

‘‘Repairs will be carried out, but there is no cost estimate yet,’’ the spokesperson said.

‘‘We urge drivers of high vehicles to observe all signs when approaching a bridge, and to be aware of the height of their vehicle and any load they are carrying.’’

Police are making inquiries into the incident.

The size of a sign across the viaduct arch, informing of its 2.39m height restriction, was increased after KiwiRail said the viaduct was the second most-hit rail bridge in the country in 2023.
