Nearly 100 stallholders are lined up for Boulevard Day on September 27, but the event will only be held if the district is at Level 1.
The long-running event was cancelled last year because of covid concerns and this year is set to be held in Ashburton Domain instead of along East Street due to upgrade work in downtown Ashburton.
Organiser Bob McDonald said he had “his fingers, toes and everything crossed” and hoped the event would go ahead.
However it would not be held under current Level 2 restrictions and would be canned if the levels did not move down.
“We intend making the call at the very last minute, probably on September 23 or 24,” he said.
A lot of work had gone into organising Boulevard Day 2021 and money had been spent on promoting it, Mr McDonald said.
The popular shopping day has been running for nearly 50 years and is held to coincide with South Canterbury Anniversary Day.
