Four people were sent to hospital in minor condition following a chemical incident at St Joseph’s School on Friday.

Hato Hone St John was notified of an incident at the school on Havelock St, Ashburton, at 9:39am.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said two ambulances and one operations manager attended.

‘‘Four patients, both in minor condition, have been transported to Ashburton Hospital.’’

It did not confirm the age of those taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand said crews assisted Hato Hone St John with a hazardous substance incident in Ashburton just before 10am today.

‘‘Crews from Ashburton, Timaru and Washdyke responded.’’

Crew remained at the site for about an hour.

Police confirmed it was notified of an incident at a school on Havelock Street, Ashburton, around 10.20am.

The incident was being led by Fire and Emergency New Zealand, a spokesperson said.
