Despite being an all-round high achiever, Sarah Reeve was not expecting to be awarded Dux of her school this year.

The 17-year-old Mount Hutt College head student said she was “super happy” to attain the honour, after putting in a lot of hard work.

“I wasn’t expecting it. There are just so many other deserving people at our school,” Sarah said.

Sarah achieved top of her year level last year in year 12 as well.

She is also a multisport competitor.

She has competed in New Zealand’s iconic multisport event, the Kathmandu Coast to Coast, twice – the first time in a team which came second in mixed open, the second time stunning the field as a junior winning the women’s mountain run.

Next year, Sarah is off to Otago University to under take a Bachelor of Science majoring in sport and exercise nutrition.

She was drawn to the course, knowing from personal experience just how important nutrition is to sports performance.

“It can definitely make or break a race,” she said.

Receiving the Dux runner-up award of Proxime Accessit was Nicole Moore.

The 18-year-old said she felt proud to have received such a big award.

She felt it had rewarded her for consistent hard work throughout the year.

Moore believed having fun and socialising was also important to academic success, as it helped create balance in one’s life.

One thing she had enjoyed this year was being on the school’s social committee.

One of the roles was helping organise the school ball.

“It was good to see it all come together in the end, everyone really enjoyed the ball this year,” Moore said.

Moore lives on her family’s mixed arable Methven farm.

Passionate about agriculture, she is off to Lincoln University next year to undertake a Bachelor of Agriculture, aiming to become a field agronomist.
