
The New Zealand ‘Grey Caps’ will play England in the Over 70’s World Cup Cricket tournament at the Ashburton Domain oval on Sunday.
The Over-70s World Cup features eight international teams who are competing in round-robin play at grounds around Canterbury. The top-two teams will play in the final at Hagley Oval on March 5.
This weekend’s game, which starts at 10am, will be the second international game hosted by Mid Canterbury Cricket at Ashburton.
In the earlier match, in the oval last Sunday, England side convincingly beat Canada by 120 runs.
England won the toss and elected to bat first putting on a strong score of 217/9 in the 45 overs game. Canada then went into bat, but were all out with 97 runs in 40.2 overs.
Mid Canterbury Cricket chairperson Jane Fowles said via a statement that England had arrived in Mid Canterbury in excellent form following a decisive victory over India earlier in the week.
‘‘England posted a commanding total of 217, highlighted by a superb 66 by Derek Towe, with strong support from Chris Evans (37) and Neil Calvert (29),’’ she said.
‘‘Canada was dismissed for 97, with England’s bowlers maintaining tight control throughout the innings.’’
She said this Sunday’s game, with New Zealand playing England promised to be ‘‘competitive and entertaining match’’.
‘‘The fixture offers local supporters a rare chance to see international Masters cricket up close, with both teams featuring seasoned players who bring decades of experience to the field.’’
She warmly invited spectators to attend and enjoy a day of high-quality cricket and support the New Zealand side.
