The weather curtailed the plans for a large Children’s Day event last Sunday at the Plains Railway & Historical Museum.
But a mini version held at the Ashburton library proved a hit.
Mid Canterbury Children’s Day chair Alice Czerski said after closely monitoring weather reports over several days and watching conditions steadily worsen, they were faced with the difficult decision to cancel the much-anticipated event.
‘‘We were reluctant to cancel, but the severe weather meant many activities could not operate safely, and the day simply wouldn’t have been enjoyable for our groups and volunteers.

Wanting to ensure tamariki were still celebrated, organisers quickly arranged a last-minute mini event on a smaller scale at the Ashburton Library and Civic Centre, Te Whare Whakatere.
‘‘Although we were disappointed not to showcase the wonderful Plains, we were grateful to still come together in an indoor venue,’’ Czerski said.
The day was a success with three full Elgregoe the magician shows. The shows along with the House of Bricks with their LEGO creativity and Clint Hawkes, the Balloon Man, kept children and families entertained.
‘‘The iheart radio Photobooth was great to get some memories from the day and eco educate was on site to support us with how to manage our rubbish alongside saving many wonderful soft toys from going to landfill,’’ Czerski said.
There were giveaways on the day from Rapid Relief Trust, Nelson Building Society, Produce Pals and Mitre 10.
‘‘We extend our sincere thanks and apologies to everyone who planned to join us, and didn’t get to,’’ Czerski said.
